This was my first attempt at making things with fondant icing…it was my little boys first birthday and he loved the shower curtain we had just bought, so I thought I would go for “Under the Sea”..he recognised the things on top so that was a bonus!
I wanted to make it as interesting as possible because lets face it that’s really all it’s got until it gets chopped up and eaten……I wasn’t at all confident in my baking skills but I was working on the theory that he was one and so he wasn’t going to much care if I got it wrong (is that awful of me?) . …I treated the fondant a bit like I would plastercine.
I would love to say I had a plan and to be honest I would have loved to have had a plan!! I looked on the internet at cake making sites, got some great information on painting and colouring icing and then just kind of went with where it took me.
I wanted to it to be interesting all round …why I have no idea as I don’t think my little man cared two hoots but I just wanted to challenge myself……
The problem if anything was deciding when to stop…
The Octopus was a last minute decision because I suddenly realised that of the things he loved on the shower curtain (the Octopus being one of the main ones) it was the thing I had missed off!!!…It came in quite handy because I had a gap and he could just drape wherever I needed him to go (another funny thing I have just realised I assigned a fondant Octopus a gender!!! ).
I think if I’m honest I was so very pleased with myself (and relieved!!) that I was hooked on fondant from then on….I truly feel fondant is just plastercine for grown ups now ……
Hey either way it’s a cake I was and still am proud of and my boy still likes looking at the pics now….so it just keeps giving
